The remains of the south tower of the World Trade Center loom in the background about 10 p.m. Thursday as national guardsmen standby and equipment operators use light machinery to push debris off the Trade Center plaza to heavier equipment for loading and hauling away. The deck of the plaza covers several layers of underground facilities, including a shopping mall and subway and train tunnels and support has been compromised. The surface deflects noticeably as the equipment moves across.
